How to make a dog Harness Yourself?

Remember how your parents used to hold your hand while crossing the road or in markets so that you just don’t run here and there. That tight hold would surely prevent us from running haywire. But have you ever wondered what that hand had also done at that time. It had prevented us all from stumbling, provided us support and helped walk the right way to avoid any problem.

How we wish we could hold our dog’s paw while walking but before this newest trend comes into existence, what is truly helping us right now is a harness.

Harnesses were originally designed for attaching to the weight of dogs for pulling or for alert signals. However, they are nowadays used for controlling our untrained pups. Just before we begin our journey into designing a new harness, there are a few points that we need to understand.

Firstly, a harness should not be confused with a dog collar. A collar encloses only the neck whereas a harness contains loops that fasten around the torso of your dog.

Secondly, there are different types of dog harnesses depending upon your needs. They can be simply classified into four types.

Harnesses are classified as follows –

1. Harnesses for Sledding:

These harnesses are used for dogs who help in cargo sledding in snowy or inclined areas. These harnesses include extra soft padding on the chest so that the weight of the cargo can be efficiently managed. Along with this, dog sports like skijoring which use sled harness are gaining popularity.

 2. Dog lifting Harnesses:

These harnesses include two handles through which one is tied to the dog and the other is given support by the owner so that there is no force on certain parts of the dog’s body like the spine and limbs. This is for dogs who are under some medical support or have undergone a surgery. With more and more advancement, we have also been able to develop harnesses for amputee dogs, thus giving them a completely normal life to live.

 3. Safety Harnesses:

These are the harnesses that used for dog safety while driving so that any injuries can be avoided during traffic collisions or to prevent the dog from disturbing the driver.

Thus, these are the few types of harnesses that we can choose to make while making a harness.

Now, that we have the knowledge, lets gear up to make one.

For making a harness, a few things should be kept in mind

Things to be kept in mind while making a Dog Harness –

  • Make sure that you just don’t take any shortcuts while making one. Harnesses are very important for the safety of your dog. If you just don’t consider the risk the fact of a safe harness and make it in a haphazard way, YOUR PUP IS IN DEEP RISK.
  • Measure sure you weigh your dog before you make a harness so that you can use a relatively stronger material for your dog. Use materials that are meant for the dogs who weigh at least four times more than your dog. Strong materials not only make a safer harness, but they also help to divide the entire force of a lunge over the entire body.
  • Keep the comfort of your dog in mind. Use sufficient amount of padding on the chests and armpits so that they have an ease in walking. Materials that are strong in nature are also known to cause rashes on the dog’s skin, thus materials like faux fur can be considered while making a harness.
  • Test your harness at home before you take your dog out. Never be too confident of your skill of making a perfect harness. You surely wouldn’t want your dog breaking free and running around on the road if the harness breaks. Thus, its always safer to test your harness once.

Now, let’s bring out our creativity and make one.
